Drop Everything and Read

During the school year of 2021-2022, Mr. Jerry Andrews (Marlboro County High School, Social Studies) acquired a classroom set of the book, “In Harm’s Way: The Sinking of the USS Indianapolis and the Extraordinary Story of its Survivors”.  This school year, MCHS Media Center began a program during 1st block, “Drop Everything and Read”.  As a result, Mr. Andrews’ class began reading the book.  On Tuesday, February 7, 2023, Mr. Andrews' world history class expanded the idea of “Drop Everything and Read” by inviting Mr. Doug Stanton to participate in a Zoom meeting/discussion with the students.  Mr. Stanton discussed his family, personal background, and how he became a writer.  Additionally, he discussed the book, its history, and how it came to be.  He began by encouraging the students to read more and to interact with family members who served in the military during any era and to incorporate those stories into essays for class, college applications, and scholarship applications.  The presentation was wrapped up by allowing students to ask questions of Mr. Stanton and about “In Harm’s Way”.  MCHS was honored to have a world-renowned author present in a small class.  Students were a little star-struck but managed to warm up as they asked questions of Mr. Stanton.  He was warm and open to each question
