Marlboro County High School’s Interact Club participated in this year’s Student in Action service competition and was selected as one of eight schools which qualified for the Jefferson Awards out of 31 schools that joined in the Youth Leadership Academy at Coastal Carolina University on March 6, 2017.

The Jefferson Awards Foundation (JAF) is the country’s longest-standing and most prestigious organization dedicated to activating and celebrating public service.  Founded in 1972 by Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, US Senator Robert Taft Jr, and Samuel S Beard, the Jefferson Award is America’s highest honor for service and volunteerism.  In cities and towns around the nation, JAF trains and empowers youth and adults to serve and lead in their communities, amplifying their impact by honoring their accomplishments and inspiring others to take action and give back.

Students in Action (SIA) is JAF’s flagship youth service program.  Active in more than 50 high schools across South Carolina, the mission of SIA is to cultivate the next generation of servant leaders through service-learning and leadership development opportunities.  This helps students stays connected to their school environment and arm them with the 21st century life skills necessary for post-secondary success.  SIA is designed to empower students to effectively address issues facing their communities. It is the only student-led, school-based program that educates young people on the root causes of the issues facing their community.
