What is AVID?

AVID stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination. It is a program dedicated to helping our students achieve their goals of attending college.  The AVID elective class, held within the regular school day, provides support, academic monitoring and tutoring. In addition to this it provides students with the structure and skills necessary to become successful in their future endeavors.  The writing process, Socratic questioning, collaborative learning and reading are the core strategies of the program.  AVID strategies have a proven success rate in closing the achievement gap in the classroom.

AVID’s Impact

For more than 35 years, AVID has prepared students for college readiness and success. From its beginnings in one classroom with 32 students in San Diego, it now impacts the lives of hundreds of thousands of students throughout the United States and the world. At its sites, AVID affects leadership, systems, instruction, and culture.
